Part-Time Mechanical Engineer

1. Background

Lumina CL is seeking a qualified Mechanical Engineer to provide expert professional opinions on the function, design, and application of mechanical components, specifically those associated with agricultural machinery, for a global client involved in tariff classification advisory services. This is a fully remote, part-time position that can be managed alongside other professional commitments.

2. Objective

To engage a Part-Time Mechanical Engineer on a monthly contractual basis to review technical documentation of mechanical parts and offer expert opinions to support Harmonized System (HS Code) tariff classification of imported goods.

3. Scope of Work

The engineer will be required to:

• Review technical drawings, photographs, part specifications, and other supporting documentation provided by the consultancy.
• Provide clear technical explanations regarding the function and purpose of each component under review.
• Confirm the specific type of machinery or equipment with which each part is associated.
• Formulate an opinion on whether each part is essential and specific to a particular machine or category of machinery.
• Prepare a concise written technical report for each assessment.

4. Deliverables

• A brief written technical report for each assignment, submitted within an agreed-upon turnaround time.
• Availability for virtual Q&A sessions as requested.

5. Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• Demonstrable experience with agricultural machinery, industrial equipment, or automotive components.
• Strong capability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
• Knowledge of or exposure to customs, trade, or tariff classification processes is an advantage.
• Registration with a recognized engineering body (e.g., Malawi Board of Engineers) is preferred.

6. Remuneration

The engineer will receive a fixed monthly fee of MWK 100,000, in addition to withdrawal fees.

7. Duration and Extension

The initial assignment is for one (1) month. The contract may be extended on a month-to-month basis by mutual agreement, depending on workload requirements and satisfactory performance.

8. Working Arrangements

This is a fully remote, part-time role. The engineer is expected to manage their own time efficiently and complete assigned tasks within established deadlines. All communication and document sharing will be conducted virtually via email or other agreed digital platforms. There is no exclusivity requirement during the contract period. The assignment will require the signature of a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA).
