Africa Sun Power Limited (AFSP) is actively seeking a dedicated Customer Data & Program Officer to support its innovative off-grid solar electric cooking solutions in Malawi. As a recipient of a CLASP/MECS Venture Building Grant, AFSP is focused on validating the performance and viability of its battery-enabled Off-Grid Solar E-Cooking Systems (OGSECS). This role is crucial for establishing a customer monitoring and carbon credit reporting system, essential for tracking energy usage and implementing performance-based customer incentives.
Location: Hardelec House, Victoria Avenue, Blantyre / Njamba, Blantyre, with regular travel to rural areas across Malawi.
Reporting Structure:
- Administratively: Program Finance & Logistics Manager
- Technically: Operations Manager
Contract Duration: One (1) year, with potential for renewal based on funding and performance. A three (3) month probationary period will apply.
Job Purpose:
The Customer Data & Program Officer will be responsible for the meticulous management of customer data systems and will provide vital support to AFSP’s solar electric cooking monitoring and discount initiatives. Key responsibilities include collecting, verifying, and maintaining customer energy usage data, assisting with customer engagement efforts, and ensuring the precise tracking of energy consumption for carbon credit allocation, incentive distribution, and comprehensive program reporting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Customer Database Management: Design, establish, and maintain a robust customer database; ensure accurate records for all program and non-program participants; guarantee secure data storage and integrity; capture detailed customer information including location, system configuration, and usage history; conduct regular data cleaning and audits for accuracy and completeness.
- Data Collection & Monitoring: Collect customer energy usage data (kWh meter readings) using digital tools, device data cards, and field visits; verify and validate collected data; monitor customer submission compliance and identify data gaps; generate regular reports on usage patterns and overall program performance.
- Customer Engagement & Support: Act as the primary point of contact for program participants; follow up with customers who fail to submit usage data; offer basic technical guidance and user support; educate customers on system benefits, program incentives, and carbon credit opportunities.
- Carbon Credit & Incentive Tracking: Assist in the development and application of carbon credit allocation formulas; maintain precise records linking usage data to incentive calculations; track and manage customer rewards and discount allocations; support customers in redeeming earned benefits, such as solar equipment upgrades.
- Program Administration: Support the onboarding process for new customers into the discount program; maintain accurate program documentation and records; monitor adherence to program rules and requirements; coordinate with technical teams on meter installation and functionality.
- Compliance & Exit Management: Monitor inactive or non-compliant customers; manage forfeiture processes for non-compliance; maintain records of forfeited credits and their values; report on compliance trends and suggest improvements.
- Reporting & Coordination: Prepare weekly and monthly reports encompassing customer onboarding/exits, data submission compliance, program performance, variance analysis, and carbon credit/incentive allocation; coordinate effectively with technical, finance, and program teams; support donor reporting requirements related to data and impact.
Required Skills & Competencies:
- Proficiency in data management and record-keeping.
- Solid understanding of data collection systems and methodologies.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, WhatsApp, and various digital data tools.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Capacity to work autonomously in rural field settings.
- Strong problem-solving abilities and meticulous attention to detail.
- High standards of integrity and accountability.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Data Management, Environmental Science, or a related discipline.
- Experience: 1-2 years in data collection or database management, and fieldwork within rural or community-based programs. Experience in solar energy, clean cooking systems, or carbon credit programs is advantageous.
Additional Requirements:
- Willingness to undertake frequent travel to rural communities.
- Basic technical proficiency with smartphones and data tools.
- Motorbike riding ability is a plus but not mandatory.
