We are looking for a results-oriented, ethical, and highly motivated Collections and Recoveries Officer to strengthen our portfolio quality through proactive collections, effective recoveries, and professional client engagement.

Job Purpose

The Collections and Recoveries Officer is responsible for managing delinquent accounts and maintaining the quality of SCGP’s loan portfolio by ensuring timely collections, implementing effective recovery strategies, and minimizing portfolio losses. The role is responsible for ensuring that all recovery activities comply with SCGP policies, the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) regulatory framework, applicable laws, and industry best practices while maintaining positive customer relationships and protecting the institution’s reputation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Portfolio Monitoring and Collections
    • Monitor the loan portfolio daily to identify overdue accounts and initiate timely collection activities.
    • Proactively follow up with clients before and after repayment due dates to minimise arrears.
    • Contact delinquent clients through telephone calls, SMS, emails, written correspondence, and field visits to secure repayments.
    • Negotiate realistic repayment arrangements with clients experiencing temporary financial challenges.
    • Ensure prompt collection and banking of loan repayments in accordance with company procedures.
  • Recoveries Management
    • Implement approved recovery strategies aimed at reducing Portfolio at Risk (PAR) and Non-Performing Loans (NPL).
    • Recommend appropriate recovery actions based on client repayment capacity and security available.
    • Coordinate repossession and realization of collateral in accordance with legal requirements and company policy.
    • Liaise with guarantors, employers, next of kin, and other relevant stakeholders where necessary to facilitate recoveries.
    • Escalate chronic default cases for legal action, restructuring, or write-off in accordance with SCGP’s Credit Policy.
  • Portfolio Quality Management
    • Monitor arrears trends and recommend corrective actions to improve portfolio performance.
    • Analyse causes of loan defaults and provide recommendations to strengthen credit underwriting and monitoring processes.
    • Work closely with Branch Managers, Credit Officers, Relationship Managers, and the Credit Department to ensure early intervention on delinquent accounts.
    • Participate in portfolio review meetings and contribute to portfolio improvement initiatives.
  • Compliance and Risk Management
    • Ensure all collection and recovery activities comply with: Reserve Bank of Malawi Microfinance Directives; The Financial Services Act; Consumer Protection legislation; Personal Property Security Act (PPSA); SCGP Credit Policy and Recovery Procedures; Internal Risk Management and Compliance requirements.
    • Maintain confidentiality of customer information and conduct all recoveries professionally and ethically.
    • Ensure fair treatment of customers throughout the recovery process.
  • Reporting and Administration
    • Maintain accurate and complete records of all client engagements, collection activities, repayment arrangements, and recovery actions within the loan management system.
    • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly recoveries reports, including: Portfolio at Risk (PAR), Non-Performing Loans (NPL), Collections Performance, Recovery Ratios, Write-off Recommendations, Recovery Pipeline.
    • Reconcile recovered amounts with the Finance Department to ensure timely allocation of client payments.
    • Prepare legal recovery files and supporting documentation where required.
  • Customer Service
    • Resolve customer queries and complaints relating to loan repayments professionally and within agreed service standards.
    • Educate clients on repayment obligations and encourage responsible borrowing behaviour.
    • Promote positive customer relationships while safeguarding SCGP’s financial interests.
  • Other Responsibilities
    • Participate in branch recovery campaigns and field collection exercises.
    • Support internal and external audits relating to loan recoveries.
    • Perform any other duties assigned by the Credit Manager or Management.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Banking and Finance, Business Administration, Accounting, Economics, Commerce, Law, or another related discipline.
  • A professional qualification in Credit Management, Banking, Risk Management, or Debt Recovery will be an added advantage.

Experience

  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in loan collections, recoveries, credit administration, or portfolio management within a bank, microfinance institution, SACCO, or other regulated financial institution.
  • Demonstrated experience in field collections and recovery of secured and unsecured lending products.
  • Experience using loan management systems and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of the Reserve Bank of Malawi regulatory framework governing microfinance institutions will be an added advantage.

Working Conditions

The role requires frequent travel to customer premises, business locations, and branches throughout Malawi. The successful candidate should be willing to travel extensively and occasionally work outside normal business hours where operational requirements demand. A valid Malawi driver’s licence will be an added advantage.
