Hospitality Manager Position
Location: Mbame Estate, Blantyre
ROLE OVERVIEW
Fisherman’s Rest Lodge, an establishment linked with a UK charity, operates as a community-focused lodge on Mbame Estate in rural Blantyre. For over two decades, it has fostered deep connections with local communities, providing a unique travel experience for families, school groups, church teams, and long-term volunteers globally.
The organization is seeking a Hospitality Manager who will do more than manage the lodge's daily operations. They are looking for an individual who understands that each guest's arrival signifies the start of a new experience.
The ideal candidate will bring a blend of warmth, professionalism, and genuine care, ensuring guests feel more like welcomed family members than mere customers.
ABOUT THE ROLE
In this capacity, you will be responsible for overseeing the lodge's daily operations and managing the complete guest journey from their arrival through to their departure.
You will collaborate closely with:
- The Fisherman’s Rest team,
- Lodge staff,
- And community partners
to ensure every guest's stay is:
- Secure,
- Meaningful,
- And characterized by exceptional hospitality.
Additional duties include local marketing responsibilities, such as attending TAKULANDIRANI events in Lilongwe.
This is a hands-on role with a strong emphasis on interpersonal interaction. The successful candidate will reside on-site at Mbame Estate, becoming an integral part of the community and the Fisherman’s Rest family.
The position operates on a flexible 7-day hospitality rota, requiring adaptability, including availability on weekends and public holidays.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead and direct all lodge operations, encompassing accommodation, catering, housekeeping, and facility maintenance.
- Extend warm welcomes and provide comprehensive briefings to arriving guests.
- Ensure guests receive ongoing support and are well-prepared throughout their visit.
- Oversee the coordination of guest itineraries.
- Liaise with community project leaders to align guest activities with local initiatives.
- Manage bookings, invoicing, and all guest communications.
- Supervise and mentor lodge staff, cultivating a positive and service-oriented team culture.
- Uphold all health, safety, and safeguarding standards rigorously.
- Address guest feedback and resolve any issues promptly and professionally.
- Contribute to marketing efforts, including social media updates and representation at events like TAKULANDIRANI.
- Maintain accurate operational records and provide regular reports to the UK-based trustees.
IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE
Applicants should possess:
- Demonstrated experience in hospitality, hotel, or lodge management.
- Robust leadership and team management capabilities.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
- A warm, approachable, and culturally sensitive demeanor.
- Strong organizational skills with the capacity to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Comfort and adaptability to living in a rural, community-based setting.
- Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and non-traditional hospitality hours.
- A genuine passion for community development and cross-cultural engagement.
- Malawian nationality or the legal right to work in Malawi.
- Proficiency in English; knowledge of Chichewa is considered an asset.
