About National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA)

The National Oil Company of Malawi (NOCMA) is a government-owned entity, established on 10 December 2010 under the Companies Act of 1984. Since commencing operations in 2012, NOCMA's primary mission has been to ensure the security of fuel supply throughout Malawi.

NOCMA is responsible for importing petroleum products and acts as the Government's agent in managing the country's Strategic Fuel Reserves (SFRs), which are located in Blantyre, Lilongwe, and Mzuzu, along with additional depots in Chilumba, Chipoka, and Mchinji.

Over the past fourteen years, NOCMA has significantly grown in national strategic importance. Its market share for fuel importation expanded from 10% in 2015 to an average of 77% by the 2025/2026 financial year. This growth is supported by enhanced institutional capacity and strategic investments focused on improving operational efficiency and effectiveness.

Position: Electrical Technician (NOC07) – Code: ET2026

Location: Head Office, Lilongwe

Purpose

The Electrical Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical machinery, systems, and equipment across all NOCMA facilities. This role ensures operational reliability, safety, and adherence to technical standards.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Install electrical components, machinery, and equipment in compliance with technical specifications and safety protocols.
  2. Diagnose and resolve electrical faults within machinery, systems, and buildings.
  3. Operate various electrical plants and equipment, including switchgears and control systems.
  4. Execute routine and preventive maintenance on all electrical machinery and related equipment.
  5. Conduct protection relay testing in collaboration with the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) to guarantee operational safety.
  6. Install and commission new equipment such as motors, transformers, and switchgears.
  7. Participate in critical breakdown maintenance and emergency electrical repairs across NOCMA sites.
  8. Maintain precise records of all maintenance activities, repairs, and inspections for electrical systems.
  9. Ensure strict adherence to safety, health, and quality standards in all electrical work performed.
  10. Undertake additional duties as reasonably assigned by supervisors to support operational reliability.

Reporting Lines and Supervisory Responsibility

The Electrical Technician reports directly to the Infrastructure Development and Maintenance Manager and does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications and Experience

  1. Hold a City & Guilds Part II or a Diploma in Electrical Engineering.
  2. Possess a minimum of three (3) years of cumulative experience in electrical engineering, with at least two (2) years spent in a comparable role.
  3. Proven track record in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical machinery and equipment.
  4. Comprehensive knowledge of safety regulations and electrical standards.
  5. Ability to interpret technical drawings and schematics.
