Nthanda PIGGERY is seeking a dedicated Pig Attendant to join their team in Mzuzu. This role is crucial for ensuring the high welfare, health, and growth rates of the pigs through daily care and diligent monitoring.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide daily feeding and watering of pigs according to specific rations for gestation, lactation, and weaners.
- Monitor herd health constantly, identifying and reporting any signs of illness, injury, or stress.
- Perform daily cleaning and disinfection of pens, feeders, and equipment to maintain hygiene and reduce disease risk.
- Assist with breeding activities, artificial insemination, farrowing (birth), and provide care for piglets.
- Weigh pigs, monitor their growth progress, and assist with animal movement within the facility.
- Strictly adhere to biosecurity protocols, including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and footbaths.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of feeding schedules, treatments administered, mortality rates, and overall animal performance.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Junior Certificate of Education (JCE) is a minimum requirement; candidates with a Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) and a Certificate in Animal Husbandry will have a significant advantage.
- Previous experience working in a swine facility or an agricultural setting is preferred.
- Demonstrated physical stamina and the ability to perform heavy lifting and manual labor for extended periods.
- Basic knowledge of animal husbandry principles, animal welfare, and farm machinery operation.
- Excellent attention to detail to effectively spot, report, and facilitate treatment for sick animals, as well as maintain precise records.
Working Conditions & Benefits
This role provides free accommodation on the farm. The working environment can be demanding, involving exposure to hot, loud, dusty, or cold conditions at various times. Flexibility is required for weekend work, early morning shifts, and occasional evening shifts on a rota basis.
