Company: Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme (MLW)
Location: Mangochi, Zomba
Job Type: Full Time | Contract
Deadline: 2026-04-10
The Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Programme (MLW) is a leading health research institution dedicated to improving health outcomes through world-class research, robust capacity building, and strong partnerships. The Social Science and Health Systems (SSHS) theme at MLW conducts multidisciplinary social science and health systems research to enhance community and health system resilience in Malawi and beyond.
MLW is seeking two Social Scientists for the 'THRIVE' project: “Transforming Health, community Resilience, and Inclusion in Vulnerable Environments affected by extreme weather events in Malawi.” This project aims to improve nutrition, mental health, and well-being among smallholder farming and fishing communities in Mangochi and Zomba. THRIVE is a collaborative effort by a consortium of research institutions including the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), MLW, Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS), the University of Liverpool, and the United Nations University.
The project focuses on strengthening community resilience by enhancing understanding of links between extreme weather events (EWEs), nutrition, and mental health, generating evidence on climate change impacts, and developing community-driven resilience strategies.
The Social Scientists will be primarily responsible for field and data-related aspects of the THRIVE Study, specifically Work Package 1 (citizen ethnographic study) and Work Package 3 (participatory action research), based in either Mangochi or Zomba. They will contribute to study design, tool development, ethics applications, and crucially, mentor citizen ethnographers and community members, ensuring high-quality qualitative data collection while upholding ethical and safeguarding standards. The role also involves leading qualitative data analysis and reporting, as well as fostering communication and planning with local leadership, District Health Offices, and partners. The Social Scientists will report to the Principal Investigator.
MLW offers an attractive remuneration package, including a competitive salary commensurate with the position, a medical aid scheme, 24-hour insurance cover, a pension scheme, and gratuity benefits redeemable at the end of each contract cycle. MLW also provides opportunities for scholarships, upgrading, and training based on successful job performance and set criteria.
Interested candidates should submit their application letter and a detailed CV with three traceable referees (at least two professional) to vacancies@mlw.mw. Applications must be received no later than April 10, 2026. Only short-listed candidates will be acknowledged. Successful candidates will undergo a safeguarding check prior to appointment and periodically during employment.
