About the THRIVE Project

MLW is seeking two Social Scientists for the 'THRIVE' project: “Transforming Health, community Resilience, and Inclusion in Vulnerable Environments affected by extreme weather events in Malawi.” This project aims to improve nutrition, mental health, and well-being among smallholder farming and fishing communities in Mangochi and Zomba. THRIVE is a collaborative effort by a consortium of research institutions including the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), MLW, Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS), the University of Liverpool, and the United Nations University.

The project focuses on strengthening community resilience by enhancing understanding of links between extreme weather events (EWEs), nutrition, and mental health, generating evidence on climate change impacts, and developing community-driven resilience strategies.

Position Function (Purpose)

The Social Scientists will be primarily responsible for field and data-related aspects of the THRIVE Study, specifically Work Package 1 (citizen ethnographic study) and Work Package 3 (participatory action research), based in either Mangochi or Zomba. They will contribute to study design, tool development, ethics applications, and crucially, mentor citizen ethnographers and community members, ensuring high-quality qualitative data collection while upholding ethical and safeguarding standards. The role also involves leading qualitative data analysis and reporting, as well as fostering communication and planning with local leadership, District Health Offices, and partners. The Social Scientists will report to the Principal Investigator.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide technical support for study protocols, data tools, and standard operating procedures.
• Plan, monitor, and evaluate data collection processes, including quality checks of transcripts.
• Train, mentor, and supervise 4 citizen ethnographers, conducting regular field visits to oversee data quality and accuracy.
• Uphold field team morale, address performance issues, and identify training needs.
• Ensure adherence to consenting, safeguarding, and research ethics guidelines.
• Provide regular written progress reports and feedback to the PI and Programme Management Committee (PMC).
• Maintain effective communication with community leadership, District Health Offices (DHO), and collaborating partners.
• Contribute to community engagement activities and specific Working Groups within THRIVE.
• Oversee organisational, budgetary, and logistical tasks in the field.
• Submit project deliverables, including reports and financial statements, on time.
• Lead or contribute to scientific manuscripts, summaries, policy briefs, and conference abstracts.

Qualifications and Experience

• Education: Relevant Master’s degree (e.g., in sociology, public health, or a related social science) with qualitative research training.
• Experience:
  • At least three years of research and project management experience.
  • At least two years in a management or supervisory role.
  • Experience conducting community-based health research, particularly with vulnerable communities and marginalized groups.
  • Experience with ethnographic methods, nutrition, or mental health is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in data handling, including relevant software such as NVivo.
• Key Competencies & Skills:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Fluent in Chichewa (knowledge of Yao is an asset).
  • Adaptability to changing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
