CIC Africa Malawi Limited is seeking a Legal Officer – Claims & Insurance to join their team. Reporting to the Head of Legal, the successful candidate will be instrumental in managing legal matters related to insurance claims, contractual obligations, regulatory compliance, and dispute resolution, ensuring the protection of the company's legal and commercial interests.
Key Duties
- Work closely with and support the Head of Legal on all claims-related legal matters.
- Provide legal support for insurance claims, including assessment, coverage interpretation, repudiation reviews, and dispute resolution.
- Review insurance policies, endorsements, reinsurance arrangements, and claims documentation to assess legal exposure.
- Assist in managing claims-related litigation and disputes, including negotiation and out-of-court settlements.
- Liaise with, appoint, and instruct external legal counsel on claims and litigation, ensuring timely updates and cost control.
- Monitor and follow up on matters handled by external counsel, including reviewing status reports.
- Conduct legal research and prepare legal opinions and briefs for review.
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and legal instruments supporting insurance and business operations.
- Support regulatory compliance related to claims handling, engaging with the Insurance regulator when necessary.
- Ensure the safe custody, organization, and maintenance of claims-related and legal documentation.
- Interview clients, assessors, and witnesses, preparing summaries and legal documentation for claims.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Legal.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LLB).
- Postgraduate Diploma in Law.
- Admission to the Bar and possession of a valid practicing certificate.
- Minimum of 2-3 years' post-qualification experience, with a focus on insurance claims, litigation, or dispute resolution.
- Sound understanding of insurance law, claims management, and regulatory compliance.
- Strong analytical, drafting, and negotiation skills.
- High level of organization, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple matters concurrently.
- Ability to work independently while effectively supporting senior legal leadership.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
