About
The Catholic Diocese of Karonga focuses on integral evangelization, development, and charity across Karonga, Chitipa, and Rumphi districts, aiming to serve approximately 800,000 people. Its social development arm, the Caritas Commission, delivers services through departments like Development (CADECOM), ensuring inclusive project participation. This role is situated within the Development Department (CADECOM), specifically for the Community Transformation Project, and reports to the Project Coordinator. The position is based in Jalawe, Rumphi District.
Key Duties
- Provide comprehensive technical guidance, training, and advisory services to farmers on subjects such as crop production, soil management, pest and disease control, small-scale irrigation, and livestock management.
- Organize and conduct training sessions, practical demonstrations, and field days to enhance farmers' agricultural skills and knowledge.
- Regularly monitor farm activities, assess crop performance, identify challenges, and collect essential field data including yields, input usage, and climatic conditions.
- Support the effective implementation of agricultural programs and community development projects, ensuring alignment with objectives and timely execution, which may involve distributing inputs like seeds and fertilizers.
- Engage and build strong partnerships with various stakeholders, including farmer groups, cooperatives, local leaders, government agricultural departments, and agribusinesses.
- Prepare detailed weekly, monthly, and seasonal reports on field activities, documenting successes, challenges, and lessons learned, while maintaining accurate records of farmer outreach and training.
- Offer continuous advice on best agricultural practices, promote environmentally friendly and sustainable farming solutions, and assist farmers in developing markets and improving value chains.
Qualifications
- A Diploma or Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Crop Science, Agricultural Extension, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated strong knowledge of both crop and livestock production systems.
- The ability to work autonomously and live in rural settings.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and training skills.
- Proficiency in collecting and analyzing field data.
- Desirable: Previous experience working with communities, NGOs, agribusinesses, or government programs; knowledge of climate-smart agriculture and sustainable farming practices; basic proficiency in using smartphones, tablets, and MS Office tools.
