VACANCY

CMG, a prominent Malawian-owned coal mining enterprise, is headquartered in Karonga at Pusi and conducts operations at Kasantha. With over five years of successful operation, the company is officially registered with the Government of Malawi and presently employs more than 200 Malawian citizens.

We are seeking experienced and highly motivated individuals to join our team in the following newly created roles. The subsequent section outlines the requirements for suitable applicants. Candidates possessing prior mining experience will be given preference.

 

Position: Environmentalist

Reporting To: The Managing Director

 

Candidates must possess a minimum of a Degree in Environmental Studies from a university recognized by NCHE.

Applicants with at least five years of experience in environmental management and monitoring, particularly within coal mining or similar projects, will be highly regarded.

Prospective candidates should be registered and active members of pertinent local environmental bodies. A thorough understanding of Malawi Government policies, legal frameworks concerning environmental safeguards, and World Bank environmental standards is also essential.

 

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Compliance & Licensing: Oversee all "enviro-legal" procedures for projects, ensuring the mining operation maintains and complies with essential licenses, including Water Use Licenses (IWUL) and environmental authorizations.
  • Monitoring & Testing: Perform routine sampling and analysis of air, water, and soil quality to confirm pollutant levels remain within acceptable limits. This includes monitoring parameters such as dust, light spill, vibration, and sound.
  • Impact Mitigation: Formulate and execute Environmental Management Programs (EMP) aimed at addressing and minimizing adverse impacts, such as acid mine drainage, methane emissions, and habitat loss.
  • Waste Management: Coordinate the collection, segregation, and lawful disposal of diverse waste streams, encompassing hazardous materials and mine tailings.
  • Land Rehabilitation: Direct efforts in reforestation and revegetation of mined sites to restore them to a stable, functional, or natural condition upon the completion of mining operations.
  • Auditing & Reporting: Conduct regular site inspections and internal environmental audits. Additionally, prepare official reports for both regulatory authorities and internal management.
  • Stakeholder Liaison: Serve as a primary contact for government regulatory bodies, NGOs, and local communities concerning environmental matters and sustainability initiatives.
  • Training: Deliver environmental awareness programs to ensure all mine personnel comprehend the environmental risks pertinent to their assigned duties.
