The Malawi – Liverpool – Wellcome – Programme (MLW) is an internationally recognized centre for research and training, funded by the Wellcome Trust in collaboration with our key partners, the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KuHes), Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and University of Liverpool (UoL) among others.

About the Role
We are seeking a professional and experienced Clinical Officer to join the Infectious Disease Epidemiology (IDE) Group under the CHAMP Drug Study. The successful candidate will be working full time under the direction and supervision of the project site lead.
The Clinical Officer will report to the project site lead.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
- Conduct daily surveillance in the Under-5 OPD and Paediatric Ward to identify enrolled CHAMP Drug Trial participants presenting for care
- Perform clinical assessment and management of study participants presenting with uncomplicated malaria, severe malaria, SAEs, or other illnesses in accordance with Ministry of Health and study guidelines
- Monitor admitted study participants and document clinical progress, treatments, outcomes and discharge information
- Document all episodes of uncomplicated malaria and all participant hospitalisations occurring during the study period
- Identify, assess, document, and report Serious Adverse Events (SAEs) and other safety events in accordance with study procedures and reporting timelines
- Collect malaria blood slides, filter paper blood spot samples, plasma samples, and ensure proper sample handling, storage and documentation
- Complete source documents, case report forms, surveillance logs and other study records accurately and promptly
- Work closely with Ministry of Health clinical staff, Senior Research Nurses, laboratory staff and other study team members to ensure high-quality participant care and data collection
- Prepare weekly and monthly surveillance and safety reports and submit them to the Project Site Lead
- Perform any other reasonable duties assigned by the Senior Research Nurse, Project Site Lead or study investigators
Supervisory Responsibility
- Work under the supervision of the Project Site Lead
- Provide technical support and guidance to study staff involved in facility surveillance activities
- Collaborate with other field and clinical staff during study activities
- Support the mentorship of newly recruited field staff when assigned
Resource Responsibility
- Study participant records and source documents
- Sample collection equipment and consumables
- Study laptops, tablets and communication devices assigned
- Biological samples collected during participant visits and admissions
Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma in Clinical Medicine
- Registered with the Medical Council of Malawi
- Valid Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification will be an added advantage
- At least 2 years' relevant clinical experience
