About the Role
GiveDirectly is seeking an experienced Human Resources Manager to join our Malawi team. This role is crucial for attracting, developing, and retaining the talent needed to achieve our ambitious program goals. The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of the HR lifecycle, strong knowledge of Malawi labour law, and a passion for fostering a supportive and high-performing work environment. You will be instrumental in strengthening our country office infrastructure, improving systems for recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and staff development to support our continued growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end recruitment process, from defining role requirements and sourcing candidates to selection and offer management, ensuring a positive candidate experience.
- Design and refine a structured onboarding program for new hires, covering policies, values, benefits, payroll, and system access.
- Conduct regular salary benchmarking to ensure competitive and equitable compensation aligned with local market realities.
- Facilitate professional development planning, identify growth needs, and coordinate training interventions to build organizational capacity.
- Manage full-cycle staff benefits administration, including vendor coordination and issue resolution.
- Oversee accurate and timely payroll processing in compliance with internal policies and local regulations.
- Maintain confidential and audit-ready personnel files in accordance with data policies and legal requirements.
- Manage leave and timesheet processes, proactively flagging any issues to management.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for HR policy queries and lead disciplinary and grievance processes.
- Support the performance review cycle, ensuring HR systems and records are updated promptly.
- Collaborate with leadership to identify and track professional development opportunities for staff.
- Plan and execute team-building activities and staff engagement events to foster morale and a shared sense of purpose.
- Champion initiatives that embody GiveDirectly's culture and values throughout the employee lifecycle.
- Act as a culture steward, creating feedback channels for staff and surfacing insights to leadership.
Requirements
- 5–7 years of progressive experience in operations, with significant exposure to human resources management, preferably in international development, NGO, or high-growth organizations.
- A relevant degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration, Operations Management, or a related field.
- Strong alignment with GiveDirectly's values and mission.
- Proven experience in managing key HR functions including recruitment, onboarding, performance management, employee relations, and local labour law compliance.
- Demonstrated ability to build high-performing teams, deliver results, and establish robust management systems.
- A collaborative management style with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, adaptable to various audiences.
- Comfort operating effectively in fast-paced, ambiguous environments, with a capacity for learning by doing.
