Deck Officer

About

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services falls under the Ministry of Homeland Security and is governed by the Citizenship Act (CAP15:01) and the Immigration Act (15:03) of the Laws of Malawi. The Department's mandate includes managing people entering and leaving the country to uphold state security, processing and issuing travel documents according to ICAO Standards, and monitoring, tracking, apprehending, prosecuting, deporting, and repatriating illegal immigrants to promote national security and safeguard employment for Malawians.

MISSION: To provide effective and efficient migration, Citizenship, Border management and issuance of travel documents in accordance with the laws of Malawi and International best practices.

The Department invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates to fill the vacant position of Deck Officer.

Key Duties

• Safely operating and navigating the patrol vessel in all assigned areas.
• Ensuring the safety of crew members at all times.
• Conducting routine inspections and basic maintenance of the vessel.
• Monitoring weather conditions and making informed operational decisions.
• Maintaining accurate records of vessel movements, fuel usage and activities.
• Coordinating with relevant authorities during patrol missions.
• Ensuring that all safety equipment is functional and properly utilized.
• Supervising onboard crew and promoting discipline and teamwork.
• Responding effectively to emergencies and distress situations.

Qualifications

• Malawi Marine Training College Class 4 Certificate.
• Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE).
• Those in possession of an advanced diploma in Nautical Studies or a Class 4 competency Certificate will have an added advantage.
• Proven experience in boat handling and navigation.
• Knowledge of maritime safety and regulations.
• At least with two (2) years' experience in operating marine vessels.
• Be aged between 35 years to 45 years.
