Job Summary
Mercor is seeking experienced Design Critics to help evaluate, critique, and shape how AI systems interpret and analyze visual design across various mediums. This role is ideal for individuals with backgrounds in visual arts, art history, design criticism, visual journalism, or theory-forward design practice who are interested in interrogating aesthetics, composition, and visual reasoning.
Key Responsibilities
- Dedicate 10-20 hours of work per week, with potential for increased hours based on performance.
- Work asynchronously with a diverse team of designers.
- Craft, critique, and review experimental design workflows utilizing frontier AI models.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 1 year of professional experience in a visual, critique-based, or design-adjacent field (e.g., design marketing or journalism).
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in a design field, including but not limited to: Art History, Visual Arts, Graphic Design, Design Theory, Architecture, Visual Culture Studies, Film & Media Studies, Illustration, Editorial Design, or Journalism (with a visual or arts focus).
- Exposure to Large Language Models (LLMs), Generative AI (GenAI) prompting, and 'vibe coding'.
- Demonstrated experience in critically writing or speaking about visual work (e.g., reviews, essays, critiques, studio feedback, editorial analysis, academic writing, design commentary).
- Must be currently based in the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, Europe, Australia, or Brazil.
- Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Exhibit strong attention to detail.
Contract & Payment Terms
- This is an independent contractor, fully remote role with a flexible schedule.
- Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded early based on needs and performance.
- Work will not involve access to confidential or proprietary information from other employers, clients, or institutions.
- Payments are processed weekly via Stripe or Wise based on services rendered.

The role is expected to begin in early March, with applications reviewed on a rolling basis. The interview process includes a short AI interview about your creative process, followed by a brief portfolio review and a written form.
