Job Purpose
The IT Officer will be responsible for developing, implementing, supporting, and maintaining WaterAid Malawi Country Programme's ICT systems and infrastructure. This role is crucial for improving the ICT functionality of the Country Programme by researching new options, recommending the adoption of new technologies in consultation with the UK IT team, and ensuring the efficient utilization of the latest information and communication technology.
Key Duties & Accountabilities
- Technical Support: Provide comprehensive technical support to staff, including documenting, prioritizing, and resolving computer hardware, software, printing, email, and operating system issues. Research and recommend technical solutions, advise on new projects, identify training needs, conduct user training, and manage virus infections.
- Software and Hardware Maintenance: Oversee routine maintenance, installation, and upgrades of network, hardware, software, and website components. Manage inventory of IT assets, administer daily/monthly backups, develop new software projects, maintain printers, and monitor adherence to security policies.
- Software Development and Enhancement: Maintain accurate records for documentation, participate in ICT projects, support business application implementation (ERP, finance, HR systems), and partner with vendors for system enhancements.
- System and Network Administration: Support the configuration and maintenance of servers, networks, and storage systems. Monitor network performance, manage user accounts, and assist with data backup and recovery. Ensure network connectivity and troubleshoot local ISP issues.
- Cybersecurity and Compliance: Implement and enforce ICT security protocols, monitor systems for vulnerabilities, support antivirus and firewalls, and ensure data protection compliance.
- Coordination with Other WaterAid Offices: Liaise with the UK IT team on local developments, service levels, and participate in global IT discussions.
- Training and Capacity Building: Provide ICT training, develop user guides, FAQs, and promote digital literacy among staff.
- Other Tasks: Manage multiple projects, maintain asset inventory, recommend procurement, and undertake other IT-related tasks as required by leadership.
- Safeguarding: Ensure all stakeholders are aware of safeguarding policies, maintain proper documentation for safeguarding on projects, and monitor/report any safeguarding malpractices or breaches.
Qualifications & Skills
Essential Skills
- Technical Skills: Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic abilities; knowledge of networking (LAN/WAN), servers, and cloud technologies; familiarity with operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux); understanding of cybersecurity principles; proficiency with Microsoft 365, Active Directory, and common business applications.
- Soft Skills: Good communication and interpersonal skills; customer service orientation; attention to detail and analytical skills; ability to work under minimal supervision and meet deadlines; strong organizational and documentation skills.
Desirable Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience in hardware/software maintenance, networking/internet equipment installations, training needs identification, and planning.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, analytical and research skills.
- Advanced MS Office experience (Excel, Word, Access).
- Strong communication skills for diverse audiences.
- Knowledge of business intelligence reporting (SPSS preferred).
- Ability to work effectively in a team, manage time, prioritize tasks, and work in a multicultural, multilingual, multi-country environment.
