The Opportunity

Save the Children is seeking a skilled Project Director to lead the Climate-resilient Healthcare and Wellbeing for Rural Communities in Southern Malawi Project. This five-year initiative, funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), will be co-implemented with the Ministry of Health in Malawi. The project's core objectives include mitigating the impact of climate-related diseases, enhancing the resilience of healthcare systems, and building the capacity of healthcare workers and communities to address the health consequences of climate change.

The Project Director will report to the Country Director of Save the Children Malawi and will lead a National Project Management Unit responsible for implementation across six climate-vulnerable districts in southern Malawi.

Key responsibilities include fostering strong collaboration with government ministries, technical committees, donors, NGOs, and consortium partners to achieve project goals in line with GCF and Save the Children standards. The role holder will manage project inception, implementation, compliance, monitoring and evaluation, financial accountability, stakeholder engagement, and overall technical and operational performance.

In humanitarian emergencies, the role holder may be required to adapt their duties and working hours.

Qualifications and Experience

  • An advanced degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, Climate Change, Development Studies, Social Sciences, Project Management, or a related field.

  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience managing large-scale, donor-funded development or humanitarian projects, with a focus on health systems strengthening and climate resilience.

  • Proven track record in leading complex, multi-stakeholder projects involving governmental bodies, donors, and international partners.

  • Substantial experience in project management, encompassing planning, budgeting, compliance, risk management, and team leadership.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage large, geographically dispersed teams and cultivate high-performing, collaborative work environments.

  • Experience with Green Climate Fund (GCF) projects or other major institutional donors is considered an advantage.

  • A solid understanding of climate-related health risks, health system strengthening, WASH, infrastructure, safeguarding, and community resilience programming.

  • Exceptional communication, coordination, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement capabilities.

  • Strong analytical, report writing, and presentation skills.

  • Proven ability to manage partnerships and represent the organization at senior government and donor levels.
