About Illovo

Illovo Sugar (Malawi) plc stands as Malawi's premier producer of raw, refined, and specialty sugars, providing employment for over 9,000 individuals. The company operates as a subsidiary of ABF Sugar, itself part of Associated British Foods plc.

About the Role

The Head of Projects & Results Delivery Office (RDO) will be instrumental in shaping how Illovo Sugar Malawi plans, executes, and derives value from its capital investments and strategic initiatives. This pivotal role oversees the enterprise capital programme, the project delivery system, and the RDO itself. Responsibilities include transforming site and functional investment needs into a prioritised, financially viable, and executable five-to-ten-year capital roadmap, fully aligned with the enterprise's strategic objectives. The incumbent will be tasked with building a high-performing team capable of consistently delivering projects and generating sustainable business benefits.

Key Responsibilities

  • Spearhead Illovo Malawi's enterprise capital programme, project delivery system, and Results Delivery Office, ensuring site portfolios, major projects, and improvement initiatives align with overarching enterprise strategy.

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive five-to-ten-year capital roadmap, consolidating all site and functional investment requirements into a single, prioritised, and actionable portfolio.

  • Critically evaluate proposed investments for strategic fit, business necessity, financial feasibility, and technical readiness, providing recommendations on prioritisation, sequencing, acceleration, deferral, or cancellation.

  • Establish rigorous standards for project development and investment assurance, guaranteeing that all proposals are evidence-based, clearly defined, and fully prepared for decision-making prior to submission for approval.

  • Oversee and enforce the enterprise project lifecycle and stage-gate framework, including defining minimum deliverable requirements, decision criteria, and escalation protocols.

  • Provide functional leadership and guidance to site-based project teams, holding them accountable for delivering against approved scope, budget, schedule, safety, quality, and benefit realisation targets.

  • Lead the Results Delivery Office, ensuring that strategic initiatives and performance improvement programmes are equipped with clear charters, established baselines, designated accountable owners, and measurable benefits, verified through post-implementation reviews.

  • Maintain diligent oversight of project budgets, financial commitments, cash-flow projections, and estimated final costs, collaborating closely with Finance, Procurement, and Legal departments on tendering, contracting, and commercial risk management.

  • Present clear and concise reports on portfolio performance, risks, and required executive decisions to senior leadership, and direct corrective actions when approved outcomes are jeopardised.

  • Cultivate robust project development, engineering execution, and results delivery capabilities across both central and site teams, while strictly adhering to company health, safety, environmental, food safety, quality, ethical, and anti-bribery standards.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Project Management, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or a comparable technical field.

  • A recognised professional project management qualification such as PMP, PRINCE2 Practitioner, APM PMQ, MSP, or an equivalent is highly desirable.

  • Professional engineering registration or a comparable technical accreditation would be considered an advantage.

  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in capital project development, engineering project delivery, programme management, or project portfolio management, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership capacity.

  • Demonstrated experience leading a Project Management Office (PMO), transformation office, or benefits realisation programme, coupled with strong financial and commercial management skills in a project context.
