Data Specialist

United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office supports the UN Resident Coordinator in leading and coordinating the United Nations Country Team (UNCT) to deliver coherent, effective, and impactful development results at country level. The UNRCO plays a central role in advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, strengthening inter-agency coordination, and enhancing data-driven decision-making across UN programmes.

In Malawi, the UNRCO provides strategic, technical, and operational support to the UNCT and its coordination structures, including the Programme Management Team (PMT), Operations Management Team (OMT), and UN Communications Group (UNCG). A key priority is strengthening data systems, monitoring, reporting, and knowledge management to improve programme coherence and development impact.

The Data Specialist provides technical support to the UNRCO in Lilongwe, focusing on data management, analytics, reporting, and strengthening systems for evidence-based decision-making across the UN system in Malawi.

Key Responsibilities

1. Data Systems & Analytics

• Develop and maintain databases, data collection systems, and data analytics processes.
• Analyse trends and patterns using statistical methods to support programme planning and decision-making.
• Clean, manage, and maintain structured datasets from multiple sources.

2. Data Visualization & Reporting

• Develop dashboards, reports, and visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau) to communicate insights.
• Contribute to preparation of analytical reports and knowledge products for UN leadership and stakeholders.
• Track and report on progress of data initiatives across UN programmes.

3. Data Management & Process Improvement

• Strengthen systems and processes to improve data quality, efficiency, and accessibility.
• Support integration of data from different sources for coherent analysis.
• Stay updated on emerging trends and tools in data analytics and information management.

4. Capacity Building & Knowledge Sharing

• Support training and capacity building of UN staff and partners on data analytics tools and systems.
• Contribute to knowledge-sharing platforms and communities of practice.
• Participate in coordination groups such as Data, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Groups.

5. Coordination & Cross-Cutting Functions

• Support stakeholder engagement through data-driven insights and communication materials.
• Act as learning and disability inclusion focal point within the office.
• Contribute to strengthening inter-agency coordination and programme coherence.

Profile Required

Experience

Minimum 3 years relevant experience, including:

• Data analysis, data management, or information systems
• Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau)
• Experience with GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS) is an asset
• Strong analytical skills, including ability to triangulate quantitative and qualitative data
• Ability to work effectively in multicultural and multidisciplinary environments

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Data Science, Social Sciences, or related field.

• Fluent English
