Company: Save the Children International
Location: Malawi
Job Type: Full Time
Job Title: Technical Lead (TL) – Climate-resilient Health and Wellbeing for Rural Communities in Southern Malawi Project
The Opportunity
Save the Children is recruiting a seasoned and driven Technical Lead (TL) for a significant five-year project, funded by the Green Climate Fund: the Climate-resilient Health and Wellbeing for Rural Communities in Southern Malawi Project. This initiative is jointly implemented by the Ministry of Health (MoH) and Save the Children in Malawi. The project's core objective is to mitigate the risk of climate-related diseases, enhance the climate resilience of healthcare infrastructure, and build the capacity of healthcare professionals and communities to effectively manage the health consequences of climate change. This project represents a crucial step for the Ministry of Health in strengthening its health systems, aligning with its climate and health priorities outlined in Health Sector Strategy III.
As a vital member of the project team, the Technical Lead will provide strategic direction and technical expertise for programme execution, ensuring the high-quality and timely achievement of project goals across six districts highly susceptible to climate impacts. The role involves overseeing interventions aimed at supporting over 56 health facilities and their staff to bolster health system resilience and improve preparedness, prevention, and management of climate-related diseases and other health impacts driven by climate change. Through active community engagement, the project will empower approximately 500 communities to better respond to health early warnings, manage and reduce climate-related health risks, and access appropriate medical care.
The Technical Lead will collaborate closely with the Ministry of Health, government authorities, donors, partners, and Save the Children’s technical teams. This collaboration will focus on providing technical guidance in areas including health systems strengthening, climate and health integration, health early warning systems, climate-resilient healthcare and WASH infrastructure, solar energy solutions, construction projects, gender equality, social inclusion, and community-level initiatives. Furthermore, the Technical Lead will manage technical teams, support capacity development efforts, promote programme learning and evidence generation, and ensure that research, monitoring, and evaluation findings inform continuous programme enhancement and policy advocacy.
This position offers a compelling opportunity for a senior professional in public health and climate action to provide strategic leadership for a major climate and health programme, fortify Malawi's health system resilience, and contribute to improved health and wellbeing outcomes for children, caregivers, and communities. The position is based in Lilongwe, with extensive travel to project districts in Southern Malawi.
In the event of a significant humanitarian crisis, the role holder may be required to undertake duties outside their standard job description and adjust working hours accordingly.
