Summary:
The Pathology Laboratory Technician will execute clinical and anatomic laboratory procedures to facilitate diagnostic testing and research. This position involves specimen reception, preparation, processing, staining, fundamental microscopic assessment, data recording, equipment upkeep, and strict adherence to quality and safety guidelines to guarantee accurate and timely results.
Key Responsibilities:
- Receive, accession, label, and track specimens in accordance with chain-of-custody protocols and laboratory policies.
- Prepare tissue specimens for histology, including grossing, fixation, embedding, and microtomy, as well as cytology as needed.
- Conduct routine staining procedures, such as H&E, special stains, and immunohistochemistry, alongside quality control for all assays.
- Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate laboratory equipment, including microtomes, automated stainers, tissue processors, and autoclaves.
- Prepare and process clinical specimens for flow cytometry, molecular testing, or other specialized assays as directed.
- Perform standard laboratory tests and basic microscopic examinations, documenting and communicating findings according to established protocols.
- Adhere to established quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) procedures, participating in proficiency testing and implementing corrective actions.
- Maintain precise and legible records within the laboratory information system (LIS) and laboratory logbooks.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory mandates (CLIA, CAP, OSHA) and institutional policies.
- Manage inventory of reagents, supplies, and consumables, placing orders and overseeing stock rotation.
- Uphold biosafety and infection control practices, including the proper disposal of biohazardous waste.
- Support the training of new personnel and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education: An Associate degree in Histotechnology, Medical Laboratory Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a closely related discipline. An equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will also be considered.
- Experience: A minimum of 1 to 3 years of practical experience within a pathology or histology laboratory setting.
- Technical Skills: Demonstrated proficiency in microtomy, tissue processing, embedding, routine staining techniques, and basic microscopy. Experience with immunohistochemistry and handling molecular specimens is advantageous.
- Computer Skills: Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and fundamental Microsoft Office applications is required.
