Credit Manager - Payroll Loans
Job Purpose
Lead and manage the payroll lending portfolio by ensuring superior credit underwriting, maintaining portfolio health, reinforcing operational controls, and enhancing customer experience, all while adhering to internal policies and regulatory mandates.
Key Responsibilities
1. Credit & Risk Management
- Ensure payroll loans are processed in strict accordance with approved credit policies and affordability criteria.
- Monitor key portfolio quality indicators, including arrears, Portfolio at Risk (PAR), restructures, and write-offs.
- Guarantee thorough employer risk assessment and accurate employee eligibility verification.
- Review and propose enhancements to underwriting standards and scoring models.
- Ensure full compliance with all regulatory and internal credit requirements.
2. Operations & Process Management
- Oversee the complete payroll loan lifecycle, from origination through to recovery.
- Ensure the timely processing and disbursement of loans within established turnaround times.
- Strengthen operational controls to mitigate fraud, prevent duplicate lending, and reduce process inefficiencies.
- Maintain meticulous records and documentation for all loans.
- Drive automation and continuous process improvement initiatives.
3. Reconciliation & Repayment Oversight
- Supervise the reconciliation of employer remittances against expected loan deductions.
- Ensure prompt identification and resolution of repayment discrepancies and any shortfall in collected funds.
- Monitor deduction efficiency and the remittance performance of employers.
- Escalate outstanding reconciliation issues and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
- Ensure accurate and timely posting of all repayments within the loan management system.
4. Reporting & Performance Monitoring
- Prepare comprehensive monthly portfolio performance reports for senior management.
- Track critical Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), including:
- Portfolio at Risk (PAR)
- Collection Rates
- Productivity Metrics
- Present portfolio trends, identified risks, and strategic recommendations to management committees.
5. Leadership & Team Management
- Provide effective leadership, coaching, and supervision to the payroll loans team.
- Establish performance objectives and monitor team productivity.
- Foster a high-performance, customer-centric organizational culture.
- Ensure team adherence to all policies, procedures, and service standards.
- Identify training and development needs for team members.
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills
- Bachelor’s Degree in Banking, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.
- A professional qualification in Credit Management, Risk Management, or Banking is highly desirable.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in lending, microfinance, payroll lending, or retail credit operations.
- At least 5 years of experience in a management or Senior Officer capacity.
- In-depth understanding of payroll lending principles and credit risk management.
- Proficiency in loan monitoring and reconciliation processes.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Demonstrated leadership and people management skills.
- Strong negotiation and relationship management abilities.
- Exceptional report writing and presentation skills.
- High level of integrity and meticulous attention to detail.
- Proficiency in loan management systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
