Metagenomics Laboratory Technician

The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) Academy of Medical Sciences, through its Center for Clinical and Biological Sciences Research (CCBR) and in collaboration with the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Benioff Children's Hospital, is conducting the MTAMBO study. This clinical research study, funded by the UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences (IGHS) and the UCSF Resource Allocation Program (RAP), aims to understand new uncomplicated febrile illness in Malawian children and their microbiological causes. The long-term goal is to develop improved diagnostics and predictive markers for serious illness. Following the recruitment of 800 children from Thyolo District Hospital, investigators are seeking to use metagenomics analysis to determine disease etiologies. For this, a Laboratory Technician is sought for a short-term (6 months) contract to actively engage in the metagenomic sequencing component of the study.

Key Duties

• Manage and curate biorepository samples and sample storage records.
• Manage, develop, and organize Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Perform nucleic acid extraction, analysis, and quantification.
• Execute metagenomics library preparation.
• Conduct Illumina sequencing of samples, including collection and storage of sequencing data.
• Perform metagenomic analysis of sequencing data.
• Enter data and findings into REDCap.
• Provide troubleshooting and consultation with partners at other labs and for equipment technical support.
• Hold regular meetings with research assistants to discuss issues, changes, provide feedback, and troubleshoot daily problems.
• Communicate with the lab team at MUST regarding the study.

Qualifications

• Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Laboratory Sciences or a related field.
• Hands-on experience in a next-generation sequencing laboratory, specifically with automated and manual nucleic acid extraction, library preparation, Targetation, Qubit nucleic acid quantification and analysis, and Illumina sequencing platforms.
• Experience with analysis of fastq files and bioinformatics for metagenomics.
• Good interpersonal skills and familiarity with laboratory and research practices.
• Good clinical laboratory research practices and ethical considerations in human subjects research training. Prior certification (CCLP) is preferred, or completion of a prerequisite course if no certificate has been obtained, prior to participant contact.
• Ability to travel between Thyolo, Blantyre, and Lilongwe for periods of several days or weeks at a time.
• Proof of Hepatitis B vaccination.

Availability and Tenure

Applicants should be available to report for work immediately. The successful candidate will be engaged for a period of six (6) months.
