Job Description

The Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Programme (MLW) is a globally recognized health research institution dedicated to advancing health outcomes through impactful research, robust capacity building, and collaborative partnerships.

MLW is currently seeking a highly experienced senior mathematical modeller to establish and lead a new team within its recently formed Data Science and Computational Modelling Unit (DSCMU).

This role represents a collaborative effort between MLW's DSCMU and the Civic Health Innovation Labs (CHIL) at the University of Liverpool. The successful candidate will also hold membership within CHIL and the Department of Health Data Science, both integral parts of the University of Liverpool's Institute of Population Health. CHIL functions as an interdisciplinary research hub, with the University of Liverpool serving as a strategic partner to MLW.

This position is based at MLW's main offices in Blantyre.

Responsibilities

POSITION FUNCTION (PURPOSE)

The selected individual is expected to lead and execute pioneering research in modelling specifically for health protection data science. Beyond this core function, the role requires a highly esteemed professional capable of the following:

  • Establishing and leading a dedicated team of mathematical modellers at MLW.
  • Providing strategic leadership within their specialization, evidenced by a strong history of interdisciplinary, team-oriented scientific contributions, including publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Demonstrating a significant track record in securing external funding from diverse sources.
  • Identifying novel strategic interdisciplinary research prospects and expanding funding channels to ensure sustained long-term success.
  • Exhibiting exceptional ability to effectively communicate research findings to critical audiences, such as policy makers, media outlets, and the general public.
  • Fostering and strengthening partnerships in this field both regionally and internationally.
  • Designing and delivering comprehensive teaching and training resources for staff and students.
  • Advocating for modelling initiatives among MLW, national, regional, and global collaborators.

Requirements

Applicants must possess a PhD (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant domain of health data science. As an academic staff member, the post holder will be expected to contribute to teaching activities. Candidates without a formal teaching qualification will be required to obtain one through the University.
